National Curriculum

Primary Education (Grade 1 to 5)

AESTHATIC SUBJECTS

We need creative people to manage and direct this world into the future. Hence by different aesthetic subjects is it possible to stimulate both brain lobes to become creative learners.

Sinhala /Tamil

An introduction to a national language Sinhala/Tamil is introduced to promote National integration and to fulfill the intentions of the government. This approach will ensure that future citizens will be bilingual.

rELIGION

To assimilate and internalize values, so that individuals may function in a manner consistent with the ethical, moral and religious observances and conduct in everyday life, selecting what is most appropriate. In this regard OKI International School ensures that all religions are highlighted and respected by all members within the organization.

Environment studies (Grade 1 to 3)

The purpose of this subject is to enhance the social values of primary school students. Social environment approaches the awareness of the national heritage, sensitivity and skills linked to members of a plural society, concern for distributive justice, social relationships, personal conduct, general and legal conventions, rights, responsibilities, duties and obligations.

INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT)

ICT approach encourages students to learn how to use ICT hardware and software confidently and purposefully to communicate and handle information, and to support their problem solving, recording and expressive work. They should be taught to reflect, discuss and consider the implications of using ICT hardware and software. Students should learn to extend the range of ICT tools they use for communication, investigation and control; they should use ICT to select information sources and media that are suitable for their purpose and assess the value of ICT in their work.

Geography (From grade 5)

Geography is a discipline that helps to grasp the dynamism of the bio-world. This dynamism is enclosed in the geographical landscape which is the synthesized product of the interaction between the physical and human environment in space and time. Thus Geography is a discipline that is concerned with the understanding of environmental and social processes and their interrelationships at local and global levels and looking at it from a spatial and temporal perspective. It is in this context that the Geography curricula in the schools have been developed.

History (From grade 4)

History has an important role in producing patriotic, spirited citizens capable of identifying and protecting the identity of the nation. The syllabus contents are about the origin and background of human civilization and early settlements in Sri Lanka.

Junior Secondary (Grade 6 and 7)

Sinhala /Tamil Language

In order to obtain an advanced knowledge of the second national language Sinhala/Tamil and to promote national integration and to fulfill the intention of the government, this approach will ensure that future citizens are bilingual and to adhere a diverse approach in the usage of different languages for practicing a lifelong learning ability

Religion

To assimilate and internalize values, so that individuals may function in a manner consistent with the ethical, moral and religious modes of conduct in everyday life, selecting what is most appropriate. In this regard, OKI International School ensures that all religions are highlighted and respected among all members within the organization.

Citizenship education

The subject contributes to the development of the strength necessary to build future goals of life through the identification of our abilities, skills and potential. These competencies are necessary to develop in society to maintain a good personality and to face unexpected and confusing situations in a constantly changing world. Production of a citizen endowed with human qualities and social values is necessary to exist in unity within a pluralistic society. This approach will give provision to understand patterns of governance in Sri Lanka and the world based on political concepts and their practical application. It is up to each nation to build up a society with mutual values responsibilities and duties to ensure sustainable peace in the country

Optional subjects

It is expected to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes, as well as the ability to think, social abilities, good habits of life and personal abilities in order to produce a congenial society and also to develop in society the ability to appreciate work of art so as to view them critically. Special attention has been paid to build up the strength necessary to create a conducive background for the maintenance of the national heritage without it going into extinction. Firm linkages with modern concepts of education have been forged with the activity-based, student cantered learning/teaching process. As such, these subjects will provide the ability for students to achieve expected levels of achievement in respect of skills related to Dance/ Music/ Art based on modern approaches to the related competencies.

History

It presents for the study of the Sri Lankan settlement and development of kingdoms and ruling and political influences made of early civilization. Student are promoted to learn about early settlement and creativity solutions kingdoms provided into the country before international influences. To process proudness of being a “Sinhiya” (lion) and continue to process in that spirit for future as a confident leader and ensure to leave the footprint what our nation stands for.

Senior Secondary (Grade 8 to 11)

Mathematics

The subject matter of this syllabus enhances the conceptualization of logical thinking by encouraging the students to master the skills of analyzing and synthesizing which would benefit in productive decision making.

Religion

English Language

The program in English is designed to qualify students in gaining confidence in working with information and ideas, being responsible for themselves, responsive to and respectful of others and being reflective as learners to develop their ability to learn. Furthermore, this process will support them to become innovative and equipped for new and future challenges and engaged intellectually and socially, so that they are ready to face future challenges.

Science

The curricular structure develops the students’ abilities in scientific concepts and principles systematically through a joyful learning environment. They will also enhance competencies related to problem-solving by using processes in science and scientific method appropriately. It is the main criterion to manage the environmental resources intelligently by understanding the potential of such resources, by understanding the scientific basis of the natural phenomena and the universe. The programme ensures that usage of scientific knowledge will lead to a physically and mentally healthy life. Students will also learn how modern technological resources can be maintained effectively and efficiently with an optimum level of energy and force when utilizing those factors. By investigating scientific movements from its beginning with day to day life experiences, students should be able to enhance different qualities of scientific criteria backgrounds of limitations and dynamic nature of science.

Business Studies & Accounting

Through this syllabus it is expected to provide theoretical and practical knowledge to the student that would give him/her guidance in his/her future livelihood, through the provision of business knowledge, recording of transactions, evaluation of business results, information technology, development of desire for saving, investment and business management. Similarly, it is expected that the initial foundation will be laid for the creation of entrepreneurs as well as other professionals by teaching this subject. Through this, it is also expected to build the human resources necessary for the economic and social development of the country. Similarly, through the pedagogical approach, it is expected to build in the students an integrated personality with focus on student centered, competency based activities. Further, it is expected that this syllabus will serve in the creation of a citizen who poses no burden to society, acts with social responsibility, has the capability of conforming to the conditions of the changing world and enjoys until the end of his/her life.

Students should enhance their knowledge in recognizing the nation-building and the establishment of a Sri Lankan identity through the promotion of national cohesion, national integrity, national unity, harmony, and peace, and recognizing cultural diversity in Sri Lanka’s pluralistic society within a concept of respect for human dignity. Recognizing and conserving the best elements of the nation’s heritage will make them confident to respond to the challenges of a changing world. Creating a supportive environment with norms of social justice and a democratic way of life, by respect for human’s rights, awareness of duties and obligations and a deep and abiding concern for one another will promote in them the mental and physical wellbeing of individuals and a sustainable lifestyle based on respect for human values.
